How to Establish a Positive Relationship Between Coach and Athlete (3 Part Series)

Anyone will admit that gymnastics is primarily a mental sport. The ability to overcome fear, frustration and sometimes failure can be a daunting task. As coaches, it is our responsibility to guide our athletes towards the path of success and help them navigate the trials and tribulations they may experience. However, that is ultimately impossible without an established, positive relationship between coach and athlete.
I am sure there are many of us who have had the opportunity to observe unsuccessful coach/athlete relationships. Not only does the negative relationship impact the coach, but it can have a harmful impact on the athlete. While our goals are to help build successful athletes, their happiness and love for the sport should never be compromised by their interactions with a coach. To improve the relationship with your athletes it is important to set appropriate expectations, model reciprocal communication, and establish mutual respect. When these essential components of a coaching relationship are improved, all parties experience a mutually beneficial relationship that yields results. In a three-part series, we will help guide you on developing the essential components of a working coach/athlete relationship. Included in the series will be ways to help you individualize your coaching techniques, model and encourage reciprocal communication, and establish mutual respect among your athletes. We will also include helpful resources for coaches, gymnasts, and parents. Stay tuned for Part 1, coming August 8th, 2017.
