Fluidity In Motion
It is often an exciting moment for a gymnast when she gets her own routine. The personalized choreography helps to highlight the gymnast’s strengths and engage the judging audience. However, after competing within the compulsory program, it is often difficult for a gymnast to develop fluidity and grace with their new choreographed movements.
Exposing gymnasts to choreography prior to their optional years is imperative. We have found that one of the most valuable tools for teaching fluidity in motion is beginning with walking basics. These basics incorporate a song selection and simple instructions. The simple instructions are meant to be slightly vague to allow the gymnast to express their own creativity.
The first few time you do this, you may notice that some of your younger gymnasts may have difficulty coming up with ideas on their own. That is okay! Encourage their efforts and model types of movements that fit the delivered instructions.
When the gymnasts begin to understand the concept of fluidity, try incorporating movements that change levels and directions. Below you will see a short, choreographed segment for more experienced gymnasts to help support learning choreographed movements with music. We love to make it a game with our larger groups! We focus on presentation and continuous movement.
We are absolutely in love with routines from Texas Dreams Gymnastics. The video below is an example the power of fluid choreography. This little gymnast is the queen of sass!
