Fluidity in Motion Pt. 2

As we continue to discuss how to build fluidity in motion, it is important to address the pitfalls that may occur when a gymnast is uncomfortable with the choreography. Despite the obvious differences between compulsory and optional gymnastics, the choreography stems from the same commands. Can a gymnast move right, left, contract, kick etc, ? When a gymnast has difficulty picking up and performing those commands, it can be strongly do to a lack of exposure and comfort with the required moves. As coaches, we see this level of discomfort arise even more when a gymnast now has to demonstrate dance, while standing on a 4 inch beam. Beam can already be an intimidating event for most athletes. By incorporating opportunities for a gymnast to move at their own pace with their own creative movements, it helps build their ability to be fluid and comfortable on the apparatus.

One way to build a gymnast’s level of comfort, especially on beam, is to expose them to various commands, but allowing them to highlight their creativity. The activity "word call out" that we will be sharing with you was presented by Cheryl Jarrett at the Region 7 Congress in June 2017. Jarrett is the co-author of three compulsory cycles for USA Gymnastics. Her lecture focused on how to develop artistry in a gymnast's movements on both floor and beam. This activity could be used as a whole group, or with more independent gymnasts, as a side stations during your beam rotation.

When beginning "word call out" gymnasts will be asked to follow a set of commands without an explanation. By not explaining the commands, gymnasts will have the opportunity to think creatively and become more comfortable looking in various directions with differing arm and leg movements. Depending on the commands given, you can have the gymnasts also alter their starting positions (standing, kneeling, sitting). Check out the video below to see an example of the activity!

We have also included a video from the Region 7 Congress. This video discusses how to increase the difficulty of this activity for older gymnasts.
